The second annual Broad Symposium brought together education experts and practitioners from across the country for a lively exchange of the best instructional and management practices in urban school districts.

The Broad Symposium Schedule

1:00 to 2:45 p.m.
Opening Plenary Session: Distinguished Panel of Superintendents

Moderated by John Merrow, executive producer and host of The Merrow Report on PBS, this distinguished panel of Broad Prize finalist superintendents shared the instructional and management practices that helped their districts dramatically improve student achievement while reducing income and ethnic gaps.

3:00 to 5:45 p.m.
Breakout Sessions

The afternoon workshops were an opportunity for Symposium attendees to choose from a series of small group learning sessions that focused on the best practices of Broad Prize districts. These workshops also showcased urban school systems that are tackling critical educational issues in their drive to dramatically improve student performance.

5:45 to 7:00 p.m.
Networking Reception

Eli and Edythe Broad, members of the Broad Prize Review Board and Selection Jury, the National Center for Educational Accountability and The Broad Foundation, as well as representatives and community leaders from the five finalist districts, gathered for a cocktail reception following the Symposium sessions.
